Hi Joe -
www.cancer.org continues to be a great site for this type of info. I e-mailed you the URL to the area of the website re "how to get proper nutrition while suffering from specific treatment side effects". I hope it and info below is helpful. It is important to have enough protein and to sip liquids so you don't get dehydrated. You aren't going to get what you need from vitamins/supplements. You need food and liquids. I'll probably run out of room, but I'll start transposing from a booklet I have: "When you are feeling queasy it is best to have...........
For Protein: boiled or baked fish, poultry, or even luncheon meat. (not fatty fried meats like sausage, fried eggs, bacon and not milkshakes).
For Breads, rice, cereals: bread, toast, plain noodles and plain rice, saltines, (not dognuts, pastry, pancakes, muffins)
For Fruits & vegies: potatoes that are baked, boiled, or mashed, canned juices or fresh fruits and vegies if system will tolerate (not potato chips, french fries, creamed vegies, vegies with strong odor)
For Beverages and misc: cold fruit-ades (what's that?) decafeinated soft drinks iced tea, sports drinks, sherbert, jello, popsicles, juice bars, fruit ices, (not alcohol, coffee, pie, ice cream, cream, hot sauce, seasoning mixtures).
Do eat 6 small meals -- even if it is grabbing a piece of bread. Don't go for several hours between eating. Cream of wheat, chicken noodle soup and saltine crackers may be best. Suck on hard candy, like pepermint or lemon if you have bad taste in your mouth. Do drink 8 or more cups of liquid if at all possible and drink an additional 1/2 to 1 cup for every episode of vomiting. Protein is a must, water is a must. Just graze tiny bits all day long if at all possible.
Joe, your friends may have specific products you can get in your markets or they may know restaurants that serve the food you need. You might carry a cold pack (lunch box type thing) to work and nibble and sip fluids all day. Tell me if you need us to send you chicken soup mix. love, Aunt Kathi
